Interior Design Trends to Watch for in 2020

Fads and trends of interior design seem to change on a seasonal basis, leaving previous inspiration in the dust. From traditional florals and accent walls all the way to stainless steel appliances and raw materials, home design innovations have come and gone over the years while always leaving a lasting impression. 2019 saw open shelving, blond wood furniture, stainless steel appliances, and the introduction of more smart home products. Moving into 2020, remnants of these trends will hang around, but new styles will begin to quickly take over.

Black Stainless Steel Appliances

Yes, you read that correctly. Gone are the days of metallic stainless steel appliances! Homeowners are now gravitating towards matte black stainless steel appliances because of their low maintenance from increased smudge resistance, and their ability to mesh well with darker tones in the kitchen. Other homeowners are choosing to mix and match stainless steel with black stainless steel, providing an eclectic touch without going overboard.

Mismatched Metallics

Metallics are definitely still in vogue with a focus on warm metals such as rose gold and brass. While 2019 was the year of copper, 2020 will focus on warm, comforting metals and their contrast with cool metals. Mix and match metals in different rooms by placing warm and cool metals of different shades in the same area to create balance and harmony. Keep door pulls, light fixtures, and picture frames in mind for pops of metallic accents throughout the home.

Formal Dining Rooms

Previous years saw the transformation of the dining room into an office, playroom, or multipurpose area that completely avoided the concept of dining. In 2020, homeowners are now shifting towards investing in the perfection of the dining room as a central room to spend time with the family after work and school. With the ever-increasing need to always be connected, being able to sit down and enjoy dinner with the family is a rare event that will be encouraged with a formal dining room.

Tech-less Living Areas

Following on the need to be connected all day every day, the introduction of tech-less living areas is rehauling the concept of the traditional living room. Without any technology insight, the tech-less living room, similar to the formal dining room, is a room for the family to gather and relax together without distraction. These rooms will tend to be decorated with more simple, quiet colors balanced with geometry and splashes of metallic accents to induce a calm and relaxed feeling.

Artisanal Crafts

There has been a strong focus on artisan items over the past several years which has been rapidly increasing over time. Ranging anywhere from small decorative items such as photo frames or pottery to handmade plates and even furniture, artisanal products have a strong focus on craftsmanship, sustainability, and supporting a small business or entrepreneur. Many consumers gravitate towards artisans simply due to the knowledge that they are supporting a working person instead of a corporation, along with the idea that their item will be a high quality one of a kind product.

Rose Quartz and Serenity

Pantone announced not one, but two colors of the year for 2020. Rose Quartz is a soft, muted pink while Serenity is a gentle, calming baby blue tone, perfectly complementing each other. Aiding in the theme this year of disconnecting from our technology, these two colors provide a quiet and peaceful feeling in all shades while offering the ability to have punches of color in different tones. If the idea of a central theme of these colors is not for you, consider large or small accent pieces in a room with other calming but neutral shades.
